Cleveland Institute of Electronics
Cleveland Institute of Electronics (CIE) is a technical college devoted to the education of technical skills through distance learning. CIE helps students meet the demands potential employees face in today’s ever-changing world of technology by offering two associate degrees and numerous certifications in electronics and computer technology. All of CIE’s courses are offered online, giving individuals the opportunity to advance their education at their own pace instead of trying to fit into the schedules dictated by institutions that only offer traditional classrooms.
In 1934, the Cleveland Institute of Electronics was founded as the Smith Practical Radio Institute. Within 40 years, the Institute had grown to over 40,000 students spanning 70 countries. The Ohio State Board of Career Colleges and Schools approved the Associate in Applied Science program in 1978. Just three years later, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers decided to allow CIE students to join IEEE as student members. World College, a subsidiary of CIE, was accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council in 1992, and 8 years later CIE and World College students made the leap into online learning by taking their first online exams. In 2004, CIE established its Computer Associate Degree.
CIE offers courses that are based on lessons that teach basic theories applicable to many areas of electronics and computer technology. Intermediate and advanced electronics courses are available for those who have an electronics foundation and want to build on that knowledge. CIE also has two Associate Degrees in Applied Science programs, but any of CIE’s courses may be applied toward an associate degree.
CIE’s approach to learning is a patented program called the AUTO-PROGRAMMED teaching method, which allow its students to learn electronics in steps determined by the individual student. CIE also has dedicated staff to offer feedback, encouragement, and guidance that is prompt and thorough. One tool used by their instructors is the online chat room where students can log on and talk with an instructor during designated office hours. If a student is unable to chat during office hours, he or she can always contact the instructor via e-mail.
The Cleveland Institute of Electronics is strictly an online institution, which means that there is no campus or classrooms; however, CIE students will find many of the same resources offered by traditional colleges and universities. CIE has a textbook buyback program that allows students to sell their textbooks back to CIE for tuition credit. Students may also be interested in the discounted pricing offered through CIE’s Bookstore on Microsoft software or in purchasing professional-quality test equipment, which is also available through the Bookstore.
The Electron, CIE’s online school newspaper, provides additional information resources available to its students. The Electron offers career advice, articles on new technology developments, an alumni forum, and the instructors’ corner.
CIE is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council, which is listed by the U.S. Department of Education as a nationally recognized accrediting agency.
CIE has several tuition assistance programs. Military service members on active duty in the armed forces may be eligible for reimbursement up to 75% of tuition. The Institute’s courses are eligible for Basic Tuition Assistance and the Associate Degrees are eligible for Up-Front Tuition Reimbursement. Qualified veterans may also be eligible for tuition assistance under the Veterans Education Assistance Program. Students may also want to inquire about the CIE Financing Special Education Loan.
