Mountain State University was founded in 1933 as a response to the community’s desire to offer young people a chance to learn during the Great Depression. The junior college, which was called Beckley College, offered accessibility during a time the economy, terrain, and poor road system made it difficult to attend any of the neighboring colleges. Through the years, the institution experienced slow but steady growth, and in 2001 when new administration brought with them a global vision for the school, it was renamed Mountain State University.
